Happy Friday, You made it! How was your week? Really? No matter how you carried it, You made it here. Take a moment to honor that.I'll be honest, when stress takes it toll, even as a wellness provider, I can say "yes" to things that don't align, attach my feelings to things that pull me off course, and loose track of where I am in the busyness. Sickness, sinus infections, moving parts all carry some weight. That's when it's most important to remember what's REAL, not what feels real.
The single most determining factor that is a guidepost for me to make it through ANY toug
h experience is the capacity to be resilient. When everybody around me can only find the problems, tech issues mean communications aren't happening, there never seems to be "enough" (time, money, whatever the present crisis is), I can either be dragged down, or see that life is a real duty, a responsibility to myself and the people I love.
It can feel hard, I know. The ability to get through it is not a FEELING and there's no way to FIND it. It's not a quality given to certain personality types, the "lucky ones".
It's a SKILL, only learned through experience, not simple or even complex knowledge.Resilience-the ability to overcome adversity-can be summed up in 3 essential patterns.
1) Cultivating hope- that vision of the life and person you want to be, where/what you want
2) Practicing awareness- understanding yourself, others, seeing what's real and what's not
3) LETTING GO of numbing and attachment to pain and discomfort.
SO where do we start?
First, hope is not a feeling, it's also a process.
The most consistent way to maintain it as an overall point of view is pretty simple.
1) Set realistic goals. They need to be attainable. Usually this means start small.
WRITE THEM DOWN
2) DECIDE on options of getting there. Come up with the plan, alternatives, and connect with people who are already where you want to be.
3) Take action. Even action that leads to detours produces learning. It's all valuable.
The best part? All of this is learned, through experience. Trial and error, testing and retesting. Just start, even if it's small. What happens if we don't?
The other side of hope is powerlessness- the belief that the outcome cannot change, and we are stuck. That's a desperate and dangerous place to be. The best definition of "power" might be said by Martin Luther King Jr. He described it as the ability to effect change. If we are looking at where and who we want to be, what's the feeling that settles in when we believe we can't change.
I don't know about you, but I don't want to live there, so I don't. I want to caption that with an appropriate emoji, but you get it.Starting this weekend, what CAN you do, what CAN you change to inch closer?Whether it's work, play, making the appointment, building the space for you, DO IT.
YOU deserve for YOU to show up, and let your village show up for you too.Respond to this message and let me know where this email landed and how I can support you. Or reach out directly and let's chat!
